Over 100 years ago an angel was born in Germany. That angel was Maria Reiner. She came to the United States as a young woman and met her husband Emil, who was also a German Immigrant, in Chicago. They married and settled in Hobart, IN. Emil went to work for Krull and Son's Surveyor. Maria and Emil never had any children together and it is believed that they never owned any real estate. They lived a very quiet and modest life and enjoyed the company of a few close friends and neighbors.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband. She passed away in 1994 at the age of 94. She left all of her possessions to the Senior Citizens of Hobart. Her estate was placed with the Legacy Foundation as a permanent endowment to benefit the Hobart Senior Citizens. The Legacy Foundation graciously funded the monies for The Maria Reiner Senior Center through two grants totaling $193,600.00.

Maria Reiner left this world as quietly as she came into this world. She probably never thought that she would become a philanthropist. She probably never dreamed that she would be remembered honorably by our entire city for generations to come. Through the dedication of this new and beautiful senior center we will be able to keep her memory alive forever.
